Earthy with red-ripe fruits on the nose. Color decent, but a bit flat. Nice flavors if a bit blunted. Nice ripe cherry/berry with lots of cassis and smoke underneath. Opens up with O2 to have more punch. Awful label with a cheezy oil painting. Decent, good stuff, but not that excellente, o que bueno -or anything...

Not much nose, a little sweet and spice. Smooth and easy drinking with some of that camphour of Spaniards, but not much finish or depth. Something to drink, but not much to ponder.

Abrazo de Toro Syrah 2007

Smokey, rich nose. Nothing sweet there (little leather perhaps). Lovely deep-pink-edged crimson color. Thin and watery on the tongue. Fresh, young. Has the pucker-y acid, smoke and camphour many Spanish wines are known for, but lacks the strong flavors of my favorite Syrahs. Certainly a quaffable Spaniard, but not a particularly "interesting" Syrah.

Altovinum Evodia Old Vines Granacha 2007

Cool label. Shimmery. Robust nose with lavender and ink. Maybe a little licorice. Zingy flavors with lots of bright almost minty punch. A tinge sweet, but also tart/inky/smooth. Fills the mouth with supple fruit and finishes with a firm smack. Nice Spanish wine for drinking alone, or with a chatty Spaniard. Or with any tasty Spanish tapa assortment. !Que Bueno Vino! As cool and shimmery a wine as the label.
2010 Altovinum Evodia tasted in early 2012. 15%
Same cool label. Fruity nose. Denser perhaps. Again has plenty of inky-ness and zingy flavors. A lot of supple fruits. Another lovely vintage, but a little less exciting when I already knew it was a good wine.

Las Rocas de San Alejandro Garnacha 2005

Black rubber "cork". (interesting. . .). Smooth, enchanting nose with hints of red fruit, camphour, and holiday spices. A bit of alcohol at finish of the nose. Tart and acid but balanced by sweet tones of bramble fruits. Tannins and smoke on the finish, but what a long lingering finish. Nice interesting wine for a great price. Really good example of the rich wine of Spain.
Note: This brand was sold to Gallo and is no longer imported by European Cellars. This vintage was however so I included that info.

Deep nose. A bit raisin-y, a bit ink-y, not really "sweet" smelling. A bit one tracked but nice flavors. No sweetness at all lots of tart and tannin. Almost bubble gum (without the sweet) or rubber at the start. Long lingering flavors. A very Spanish deep-heavy wine. Good drink-ability but not excellent.

Ink, violets and a little sweet on the nose. Smooth easy to drink but not exactly "soft" in the mouth. Bit of bitter and wood shavings with the fruit and lavender flavors. However has a pretty clean finish; flavors linger a bit but the tongue feels refreshed. Almost crisp. Definitely a, "good-with-food" wine. Not as robust and deep as many Spanish but a good deal for $5. Cool label. Quality wine.

Fruit there but subtle. Minor tannins for Tempranillo. A bit floral in taste. Better after a day or two with air in it. Rich fruit with the slight black tea element of good Tempranillo.

Light, low tannin Spanish red. Some fruit but unfortunately not very dense or deeply robust. Not spectacular. Not bad. I'd like to try it again from a different year. Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Graciano blend.
