Cycles Gladiator Belle Epoque Red Wine Central Coast 2007

Cycles Winery, Soledad, CA. 13.5%

Nose is subtle and not very distinct. Some light fruit and ink. Nice clean flacor. A bit bitter, with some good cherry and berry tones. A little tart. A very drinkable blend that invokes French Rhone blends. Cool, classy label with a bike which is very Davis. I'd love a T-shirt of it... The wine is good too. Definitely on the good to buy list if wine partying or looking for a romantic evening ordering in...

Sweetwater Sustainable Land Co 20006 Zinfandel

Sonoma County, Russian River Valley, Chalk Hill AVA
Sweetwater Sustainable Land Company, Santa Rosa, CA

Nose of Zin through and through with jammy (strawberry or cherry) sweetness and herbs plus smoke. Lovely flavors, strong and robust as a Zin usually is. Not deeply extracted and concentrated tones like Lodi or foothills Zin, but most certainly as zingy, pert, and spicy as they should be. Excellent wine. Hope the sustainability isn't just lip service but the wine provides great lip, tongue, and nose service anyway...

Bodega Privada Malbec 2008

Mendoza, Argentina. 13.9%
Produced and bottled by: RPB S.A.
Imported by: American Beverage Group Inc. Petaluma, CA.

Fresh bouquet of floral, herb, and fruity scents. Nice pink-edged deep-red-rose color. Explosive flavors. Tart and tannic, but clear, clean fruit and a nice understated elegance. Deep, slightly bitter finish. Good balanced, pleasing wine. Cool frosted bottle Spanish tasting notes on the label give just the right sheen of mystery to this sleeper of a wondrous wine.

Pannotia Vineyards Garnacha 2006

Vino De La Tierra de Castilla y Leon, Spain. 13.5%
Produced by: S.A.T. Masies D'Avinyo
Imported by: Pannotia Vineyards, Columbia, SC.

Earthy with red-ripe fruits on the nose. Color decent, but a bit flat. Nice flavors if a bit blunted. Nice ripe cherry/berry with lots of cassis and smoke underneath. Opens up with O2 to have more punch. Awful label with a cheezy oil painting. Decent, good stuff, but not that excellente, o que bueno -or anything...

Cultura Malbec/Syrah 2003

60% Malbec, 40% Syrah. La Rioja, Argentina. Produced and bottled by: La Riojana COOP. 13.5%
Imported by: Oenos Global Inc. San Diego, CA.

Tart and smokey nose. A little diffuse and faded. Not nose filling nor expansive. Fruit forward with some nice ink and smoke tones. Tart and a tad bitter. Good but lacking dimensions. Not really "smooth" but "slender". Nice earthy/herby finish. A very pleasant wine, but not very intriguing. Definitely not up to the importers bottle catchphrase, "if you have never tasted passion, now you know what it feels like..." But, the best yet in the Syrah's around the world six pack from Mom.

Tuttobene Toscana Rosso igt 2006

Bottled by: Tenimenti Angelini, S. p. A. Castallina in Chianti, Italy. 13%.
Imported by: Wilson Daniels Ltd., St. Helena, CA

Heavy, dark nose. Some fruit, some liquor. Good balanced flavors. Not overly tannin with dark fruits and tart tongue. Pleasing notes. Pretty simple Italian red wine, but well made and pleasing. Perfect for the pasta, red sauce and meatballs.

Sumaridge Syrah 2004

13.5% Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Walker Bay, South Africa
Imported by American Wine Distribution Inc, San Francisco, CA
(An entry in the Syrahs around the world gift pack from my mom).

Nice nose with hints of vanill, spice, ink and sweet fruits. Rough flavors. Some cherry/berry but too much charred oak, tobacco, and tannin. Strangely watery and thin as well. No balance. Pretty unappealing example of my sacred Syrah. Needs more acid and deeper character. Less oak. (Big loser so far of Syrah's around the world taste-off).
